Independent test results
BRE full test report – Testing of light pipes.
Report number 280962
Recently published, this independent report from the respected BRE (Building Research Establishment) gives customers an independent and objective view of the performance of the UK’s three leading rigid light tunnel systems. In this test, the Solarspot D-38 was tested against the SunPipe 450 from Monodraught and Solatube 290 DS.
The report not only shows the results of the test but details the product specifications, testing methodology and calculation techniques.
The tests were carried out at the BRE’s headquarters in Hertfordshire under natural sky conditions to give a true reflection of UK weather and light level conditions. The findings graphically illustrate the efficiency, or otherwise, of all three systems and relates the results to the amount of actual light delivered.

Hallways and corridors
Bungalow hallways are historically problem areas when it comes to the use of natural light. At the bottom of the priority list for windows, many bungalows suffer as a result and halls are left as dark and unwelcoming areas of the building.
This case study shows how the inclusion of a single unit install in a matter of hours can transform a dark hall into a brightly lit space.
Case studies – Hallways
Ground floor extensions
With the cost of moving at an all-time high, home extensions are proving an attractive option for many home owners. One downside, and often unforeseen by both owners and architects, is the resultant dark areas that are left in the original parts of the building.
This case study highlights the issue involved and shows how the inclusion of a simple Solarspot sun pipe can bring the daylight back in to the heart of the building.
Rushcliffe Care Home
Whether as a result of space, privacy or security issues, care home bathing and toilet facilities are often left without any source of natural light. Peace of mind for the management of the home but not good news for the occupants that have to use these dark and gloomy facilities.
This case study illustrates how one forward-thinking operator used Solarspot sun tunnels to light the bathrooms naturally without compromising on privacy or security.
It’s a common problem in many commercial buildings; offices, meeting rooms, staff areas etc., that are in the heart of the building and devoid of natural light. These spaces are often considered to be second class and undesirable to work in – it’s no coincidence that seniority and access to natural light generally go hand-in-hand.
This case study shows how the natural light issue of many light-locked areas of commercial buildings can be turned back into well-lit, welcoming spaces without major building work or capital outlay.
Fitting a Solarspot daylight system is a relatively straight forward process but does require the installer to follow certain procedures and safety protocols. The downloadable eight-page guide details the procedure for installation from fitting the ceiling diffuser and weathering in the diffuser through to adjustable angles and configuring extension tubes.
The safety instructions highlight Health & Safety issues that come with working at height and using power tools. Please read both documents prior to commencing the installation of any Solarspot sun tunnel system.
